NPHI Honors Four Outstanding Leaders and Organizations at 2024 Summit

At our 2024 Annual Summit in Kansas City, we had the distinct honor of recognizing exceptional individuals and organizations who have made lasting impacts on healthcare innovation and end-of-life care.

During the event, the American Lung Association was awarded the Healthcare in Action Innovation Award. This prestigious accolade was granted for the Lung Associations “120 years of innovative and outstanding contributions towards enhancing global lung health.” The American Lung Association has continuously expanded its role as a health innovator, tirelessly working to improve care equity for all. Harold Wimmer, the extraordinary CEO of the Lung Association, graciously accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

We also unveiled our Inaugural Chirag Patel Legacy Award, granted posthumously to the late Dr. Chirag Patel. This distinguished honor recognizes individuals who embody the spirit of compassion, innovation, and patient-centered care exemplified by Dr. Patel. Dr. Rana Patel, his dear wife, accepted the award in a very moving moment for all those in the room. Going forward, we will be honored to present this accolade each year at our Summit in memory of Dr. Patel’s inspiring legacy.

Recognizing End-of-Life Care Pioneers

In addition to these awards, two exceptional individuals were celebrated at our Summit Celebration evening event for their significant contributions to end-of-life care.

Judi Lund Person, MPH, CHC received the NPHI Lifetime in Excellence Award for her remarkable advocacy efforts. Judi’s tireless engagement, along with a dedicated group of advocates, led to the inclusion of hospice in Medicare in 1982. Her dedication to advancing regulatory and compliance standards has made her one of the most recognizable figures in our community.

Christy Whitney was awarded the NPHI Champion of End-of-Life Care Award in recognition of her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing mission-driven end-of-life care. Since the inception of NPHI, Christy has been a pivotal figure and a staunch champion of our cause. Her esteemed emeritus membership on the NPHI Board further underscores her invaluable contributions.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our awardees: the American Lung Association (Harold Wimmer), Dr. Chirag Patel, Judi Lund Person, and Christy Whitney. Their dedication and significant contributions have shaped the landscape of healthcare and end-of-life care across the United States. Congratulations to all!
